POSTPARTUM DOULAS

Why Use A Postpartum Doula?

A Postpartum Doula is a person trained and experienced in providing care during the first few days or weeks following childbirth. Postpartum Doulas, unlike a baby nurse, nurture the whole family and do not just care for the baby. A Postpartum Doula comes to the mother’s home to help care for and educate the new family. She may offer instruction on newborn care, mother care, breastfeeding, and parenting. She may also offer help with the household chores, sibling care and meals. Please inquire with each Doula as to what services she offers as they vary among each individual.

  • feel more secure and cared for
  • have greater success with breastfeeding
  • have greater self-confidence
  • have less postpartum depression
  • have lower incidence of abuse
  • are better in adapting to their new family dynamics

The first year of my journey as a doula unfolded beautifully with the support and openness of over 40 families. I have been involved with Birthing Programs specializing support in multi-cultural, multi-lingual support, and young mothers under 22, private clients who I have had the blessing to meet, and being a part of the Board of Directors of a non-profit Doula organization. I commit to doing my best in supporting your experience so it will be remembered as you hoped and wished for it to be.

I am blessed to know what it feels like first-hand to be well supported (and the other way around) when having a baby and growing with him. I am bilingual in English and Japanese, building my home in Honolulu with my loving ever-growing ohana.

全てのサービスは、英語と日本語の両方で提供させて頂いています。

My name is Jessica and I am a DONA trained Birth Doula, Postpartum Doula, and volunteer with Operation Special Delivery. I studied Speech Communication and Womens Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where I had the privilege of teaching introductory Womens Studies and Speech courses. However, after the birth of my daughter, I realized my true passion was to teach women to trust their body’s ability to give birth.

It is my hope that the families I work with will feel empowered to reclaim their birth and parenting experiences so that they can look back on the memories of their child’s beginning with peace, pride, and fulfillment. This means that you will be encouraged to make your own informed decisions regarding when, where, and how you will birth your child as well as how you will care for your child after the birth. It is my job to support those decisions and to help you communicate your wishes effectively to your care provider, friends, and family. I also believe your partner to be an integral part of the birthing and postpartum process and do my best to enhance your partner’s participation.

I have 30+ years of experience in supporting mothers and their families after childbirth. I am a certified Postpartum and Birth Doula through DONA International and a certified Labor Doula through the Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA) and I am certified in Lactation Counseling. I also specialize in working with "multiple birth" families.

My duties can change from day to day, as the needs of the family change. A large part of my role is to educate the family by sharing information about the baby’s care, breastfeeding and making sure the mother is fed, well hydrated and comfortable. This will make your life easier, less complicated and more peaceful. I can help to coordinate your household to adjust to the babies’ schedules so you can rest, heal faster, and just be one on one with yourself, your partner and your babies. As your postpartum Doula, I will work to help you obtain your goals, I consider myself your professional assistant, and I am unbiased and able to assist you in “your“ choices for your infants care.

On a personal note, I am married and have 6 adult children (1 set of twins) all natural births and breastfed. I also have 14 precious grandchildren. I consider the birth of a child to be a miracle and one of the most significant events that takes place in a woman’s life, and I strive to offer a loving, caring, and supportive environment for my clients and their families.

My job as a postpartum Doula is to provide education, support, and evidence based information to the family during the postpartum period. I provide support and education, as it is needed for each specific family. My duties include meal preparation, laundry, dish washing, bottle preparation, errands, and light housekeeping. In addition I can provide help in organizing the baby’s space to better fit your needs. I also help support breast-feeding, bottle-feeding, cloth diapers, and any choices the parent’s make in parenting. It is my goal to make sure the family is confident and comfortable in their new roles as parents.

Aloha, I am Daniela Brown, trained postpartum doula working on my certification. It is exciting and also scary when taking on the role of a new parent. The planning, shopping, family stresses and anxiety about the new baby can be overwhelming. Here in Hawaii often the extended family lives on the mainland and the military parent might be deployed. I find it very rewarding to be able to support families in these situations.

I believe that all families need nurturing support during their postpartum period. In many cultures the whole community comes together to support new parents and their babies after childbirth. As a postpartum doula I take great pleasure in taking on this role. I feel that each family’s postpartum experience is unique and different for each family. I feel that my role as a postpartum doula is to offer support, guidance and information without interfering with the parents’ decision and to support each family in finding their own way on their path to parenthood.
